October saw the start of the Year for the Schools’ Parliament. This year we have four representatives, two from Yr 10 and 2 from Yr 9. The first meeting took place at the Lace Conference Centre in Sefton Park. Approximately 150 delegates attended from schools throughout the city and it was pleasing to see many of our young friends from Special Schools. Jonathan, Joseph, Liam and Patrick equipped themselves well in the question and answer sessions and said that the workshops on Underage Drinking and Knife Crime in the city were most enlightening. The meeting was specifically designed to assess the feelings of the youth of this city and use this information to update the CYPP.
During the second session of Parliament the Prime Ministers were elected and the changes to the running of the future meetings were discussed. Following on from research carried out by Mrs Smith it was felt the young people should have a greater say in the general running of the Parliament and that focus groups could be used to discuss issues so allowing more students to have their say. This year promises to be interesting.
